Year 10 pupil, Juan Ayuso, had an incredible weekend of cycling winning the VII City of Gandia ‘Cadetes’ Cycling Tour on the 3rd and 4th of March. The first stage was a gruelling 60 kilometres starting and finishing in Gandia. Out of 126 cyclists Juan, who is the champion of Spain in the ‘cadete’ age group, fought for first place in a frantic sprint for the finish line. He was beaten by only a few millimetres, however, he finished with the same time as the overall winner of the day putting him in an excellent position for the next stage.
Sunday’s race, the second and final stage of the event, also started and finished in Gandia. Juan, representing the Ginestar–Ulbsports team, once again had an exciting race leaving the peloton in the last kilometres with Belgium rider, Ramses Debruyne. With the finish line in sight Juan found inner strength and left the Belgian in his wake, finishing nine seconds ahead of him and 1’18” ahead of the peloton. Not only did he take the podium for winning the whole event, Juan was also victorious in the mountain stage of the race.
A fantastic effort – well done Juan and good luck in your future events!
