Congratulations to Alex de Jong, Year 11, and Jamie Tye, Year 12, who have won prizes which will enable them to attend a two-week intensive course at Cambridge this Summer. The letters from Immerse, announcing their success, congratulated them ‘on being recognised as among the highest calibre students in the world.’
The competition was incredibly challenging: to solve a global problem, in a creative essay using a subject that they would like to study at university.
Alex de Jong said that his essay, using Chemistry, ‘began as a curious idea for a concept that could be potentially original; hours of research later, I had a genuine plan to combat a substance poisoning millions’.
Jamie Tye’s entry, combatting the ‘overuse of media’, wrote that ‘creative writing needs to be promoted to the young . . . to sway children’s minds from within social media and turn them towards a library or book shop.’
