The first full day in New York was a busy and a long one. After breakfast in the hotel everyone headed to the subway to catch the train to South Ferry Station. It was then a short walk to the ferry terminal to board the boat to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty. It was freezing on board but students suffered the cold and stayed on the open deck in order to take in the views and to take photos of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. After walking around the island and taking more photos, with the Statue of Liberty in the background, students and staff once again boarded the ferry and travelled the short distance to Ellis Island to visit the former immigration station and museum. Students were able to learn about the station which opened in 1892 and closed in 1954 and the ordeals immigrants suffered whilst waiting to find out whether they would be allowed to live in the USA.
After returning to Manhattan and another subway trip to the Business Centre of New York, the group had lunch and then visited the 9/11 Memorial. A short time was allowed in the shopping centre near the memorial and then a long walk to Chinatown for a delicious Chinese meal. A very tired group eventually returned to the hotel after yet another subway journey.
